CHICAGO – Chicago State women's basketball opened with its best quarter of the 2019-20 season as the Cougars poured in 37 first-quarter points, before falling 88-78 to Western Illinois Saturday at home.
Kourtney Crane (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) led a CSU dominated performance during the first period as the sophomore guard scored 12 points in the opening ten minutes and the Cougars led the Leathernecks 37-27.
A sluggish second period plagued CSU, as the Cougars held onto a narrow three-point (46-43) lead heading into the locker room.
The final twenty minutes were all WUI as the Leathernecks outscored the Cougars 45-32, to seal the ten-point (88-78) victory.
CSU
- Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) (18), Crane (17), Ines Mata Boix (Madrid, Spain/) (13), Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) (11), and Aja Poumiphat (10) led the balanced scoring effort for the Cougars.
- Mata Boix finished with a double-double, adding 11 rebounds to her 13 points, while also blocking 4 shots and dishing six assists.
- Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) trailed Mata Boix with ten rebounds, and blocked two Leatherneck shots.
- Poumiphat led the game, dishing seven assists and added seven rebounds.
- CSU led for 23:26 minutes of the game, seeing a lead as large as 15.
WIU
- Grace Filmore (19), Olivia Kaufmann (16), Annabel Graettinger (15) and Evan Zars (10) lead the Leathernecks in scoring.
- Zars earned a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds.
- WIU connected on 11-for-31 from downtown.

After a week-long break for finals, the Cougars return to action on Dec. 14 as CSU travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan.
