CHICAGO, Ill. - For Chicago State freshman golfer
Maria Quintero, this season has been about far more than adjusting to college competition — it's been about rising to every challenge with purpose. The Venezuela native and Doral Academy graduate entered her first year ready to compete, but it was her response to adversity, including a mid-season injury, that revealed the depth of her drive. Supported by a team culture that values growth and accountability, Quintero pushed through setbacks and delivered one of her strongest performances on the biggest stage: the NEC Championship. Her focus, resilience, and emerging leadership have made her one of the most compelling young talents in the program, and her ambitions stretch well beyond her freshman campaign.
If I could describe my first season with Chicago State in one word, it would be "growth." It was a season filled with challenges, triumphs, and lessons that have helped me become a better golfer and person. I got injured halfway through the season, which was a significant setback, but it also provided me with an opportunity to develop my mental strength and resilience. The road to recovery was not easy, but it taught me the importance of patience and perseverance. It was a crucial lesson that will continue to guide me in my future endeavors.
My journey to Chicago State
What drew me to Chicago State was the opportunity to be part of a team that is supportive, competitive, and always striving for excellence. I wanted to be part of a community where I could grow as a golfer and as an individual. From the very beginning, I set personal goals to improve my game and stay consistent. While the injury was a setback, it didn't deter me from my goals.
I was determined to come back stronger and make a meaningful contribution to the team. One of the most rewarding aspects of my first season was the camaraderie and support I experienced with my teammates. We had numerous moments of bonding and encouragement, especially during the conference. The bus rides, dinners, and practice rounds were filled with laughter and positivity. Coach always made sure we had a positive mindset, and it was in those moments that I realized how lucky I was to be part of such a fantastic group.
My 7th place finish at the NEC Women's Golf Championship
Competing in the NEC Women's Golf Championship was a memorable experience. After being away from competitive play since February, I had forgotten the feeling of having butterflies in my stomach when standing on the tee box. But I embraced that feeling and focused on staying calm, trusting my game, and taking it one shot at a time. Consistency was the key to my success during the tournament. I was able to maintain a steady performance throughout, and it was a reminder of how crucial focus is at this level. Finishing 7th at the NEC Women's Golf Championship was an accomplishment that I am incredibly proud of, and it has motivated me to continue working on my game.
Looking ahead
As I look ahead to future seasons, I am most excited about building on the foundation I have established. I want to keep improving my consistency and lowering my scores. Each tournament is an opportunity to learn and grow, and I am eager to embrace those opportunities. Additionally, I want to become someone my team can rely on even more. If I could offer any advice to younger golfers looking up to me, it would be to stay focused on their own journey. Everyone improves at a different pace, so it's important to be patient and keep believing in yourself. Hard work and perseverance will always pay off in the end. My first season with Chicago State was a journey of growth, resilience, and camaraderie.
I am grateful for the challenges I faced, the lessons I learned, and the support of my teammates and coaches. I am looking forward to building on this foundation and making an even greater impact in the seasons to come.
